Toward A Social Philosophy of Feeling

Contrary to popular belief, I believe happiness is a circumstance — not a choice. That does not mean I think individuals have zero control over this feeling, however it remains to my observation that we have far less control than we would like to have ideally. The amount of control over emotional states that most people seem to like to have (and therefore often pretend to have) appears to be closing in on 90 to 100% of control. As if happiness were a switch within and all we have to do to be it all of the time is locate its GPS coordinates. Sorry, but no. It does not really work like that.
